The One Habit that Truly Prevents Clutter
Clutter can easily take over our homes and our peace of mind. It often starts innocently enough—a few misplaced items here and there—but before you know it, the clutter begins to accumulate, turning your once-cozy space into a chaotic environment. Whether your home is just a bit messy or in full disarray, the mere thought of having to sort through your belongings can feel overwhelming. The task of deciding what to purge and what to keep may make you want to crawl into bed to binge-watch your favorite show or leave the house entirely, pretending the mess doesn’t exist.
Imagine a life on the other side of your clutter, where each room feels open and inviting and you can find what you need without digging through piles of forgotten items. Picture waking up in a space that inspires calm and clarity, where you have more time to do the things you love and more peace of mind knowing that your surroundings reflect the life you want to lead. All of this is within reach with one simple habit.
The Habit: Maintenance Decluttering
Maintenance decluttering isn’t the same as the initial overhaul of your home. By the time you reach this stage, you’ve already sifted through your belongings, let go of the unnecessary, and created a relatively clutter-free space. Now, it’s about making the time to keep it that way. Whether it’s dedicating a few minutes each day to put things back in their place or setting aside time each week to evaluate what you really need, this small change can lead to lasting order in your home.
So where do you begin with maintenance decluttering, and how do you keep it up? The key to success is to treat it as a mindset rather than just a series of actions. For example, if you open your cabinet and notice your kids have slowly added an assortment of free cups to the mix, take the 5 minutes to sort through the cabinet and purge the excess. If you open a dresser drawer and it seems overfull or disorganized, spend ten minutes tidying it up, or make a mental note to tackle it later in the week. By consistently looking for these small opportunities throughout your day, maintenance decluttering becomes second nature.

Seasonal Maintenance Decluttering
A great way to add some structure to your maintenance decluttering routine is to align it with the changing seasons. As you swap out clothing for fall and winter or spring and summer, take a moment to sort through your wardrobe and remove any excess or poor quality items. Apply the same method to shoes, handbags, and other fashion accessories. Keep in mind, this task doesn’t have to be overwhelming—a seasonal declutter of your closet or dresser should take less than an hour, and often much less. You can then repeat this exercise for your kids closets, taking note of anything they may need in the next size up.
While we’re on the topic of seasons, let’s talk holiday decor. When I was a kid my mom would send me into the attic to retreive what felt like countless holiday bins. I’d pass them all down and then often put them back into the attic half-full a few days later because she decided not to use certain items. For years and years we’d get everything down just to put half of it back up- filling our attic with outdated decor that would never be used again. Come to think of it, this activity may be what led to my clutter free life. 😉 All jokes aside, this a great opportunity for maintenance decluttering. Take the time to sort through your holiday decor each year, keeping what you love and purging what you don’t. Make a habit of fully emptying bins and dumping them out to get rid of things like foam balls, glitter, ornament hooks, or anything else lingering in the bottom of those storage bins. Though this may seem like a small impact, it certainly makes your holiday decorating process a bit more stress free and saves storage space. You can find more about the benefits of decluttering on here, explain how even less boxes in your attic have an impact on your well-being.

Another option for maintenance decluttering is simply to schedule it, similar to how you might plan for a day to clean your home. You can choose specific rooms, closets, or the entire upstairs and just make it happen. We recently tackled both boys rooms while they played together on a rainy day and it felt so nice to sort through everything and restore order. As a bonus, it only took about an hour and a half and we collected just one medium size bin worth of things to donate. This is the beauty of maintenance decluttering. In just a few hours the boys rooms were decluttered and organized, leaving us with enough time to play and make memories together.
I’d like to close with a popular maintenance decluttering strategy: the idea of removing an item from your home each time you bring something new in. For some, this approach can be very effective, and if it resonates with you, I wholeheartedly encourage you to adopt it.
There’s a logical aspect to this idea—if you buy a new pair of shoes to replace a worn-out pair, it makes perfect sense to let go of the old ones. However, when it comes to items like a beautiful new photo frame that you love and have a designated spot for, you don’t necessarily need to seek out something else to discard. Each situation is unique, and it’s important to find a balance that works for you. Trust your instincts to create a home that reflects your personal style and needs.
